  32. SPECIAL NOTES FOR USERS OF WINDOWS 95

  34.   This version of Plug-In has been modified to work with Windows 95 (Win95)!
  35.  
  36.   We are hard at work on a major update to Plug-In which will take full
  37.   advantage of the many new features in Win95.  We expect to ship this new
  38.   version early in 1996.
  39.  
  40.   In the meantime, you can still get a lot of use out of the current
  41.   version of Plug-In.  Please refer to the special Win95 topic in
  42.   Plug-In's HELP.  There are a number of notes to help you better
  43.   understand how Plug-In and Win95 work together. Please note that this
  44.   special HELP topic is the only source for documentation on using this
  45.   version of Plug-In with Win95. The rest of the HELP text remains
  46.   unchanged and there is no mention of Win95 in the Plug-In configuration
  47.   dialogs.

  49.   As far as installation goes, simply follow the directions below, as there
  50.   are no substantial installation differences between Win3.x and Win95.

  55. WHAT IS PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS?
  56.  
  57.   Plug-In Fills the holes in Windows! 
  58.  
  59.   Plug-In is an enhancement utility for Windows.  It seamlessly integrates
  60.   with Windows and works with any Windows Desktop.  Plug-In feels like a
  61.   natural extension of Windows...
  62.  
  63.   Plug-In is highly praised by the press as well as a legion of loyal users!
  64.   It is winner of Windows Magazine's Win 100 Award (1993 & 1994 & 1995)
  65.   and Byte Magazine's / Jerry Pournelle's User's Choice Award (1992 & 1993).
  66.   In addition, it was 1st runner-up for best Windows Utility at the

  114. WHAT IS NEW IN PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS, VERSION 2?
  115.  
  116.   Lots!  In fact, there is so much new functionality that it could be
  117.   considered a new product.  Please see the above list of features and
  118.   be sure to look in our on-line help for full details on how to use
  119.   the new capabilities!

  122. INSTALLATION NOTES & SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  123.  
  124.   Plug-In works with all flavors of Windows 3.1, including Windows 3.1, 
  125.   Windows 3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
  126.   Plug-In also functions with the newly released Windows 95 (Win95)!
  127.   Plug-In is designed to be an integral part of Windows and is thus 
  128.   always "running" ... however, it uses your memory and processor 
  129.   sparingly!  The Plug-In package includes a number of sound files.  If
  130.   you do not intend to use these, you may delete *.WAV from your Plug-In
  131.   home directory to free-up some disk space.  If you also have the
  132.   talking clock files, but do not need them, you may delete *.SAY and
  133.   *.DAT from your Plug-In home directory.
  134.  
  135.   Plug-In takes between 0.5 and 1.5 MB of disk space (depending on
  136.   whether or not you are using the sound files).  It uses between
  137.   2% to 3% of system resources when it is running.
  138.  
  139.   Once you have unarchived (or copied) all of Plug-In's files to a
  140.   directory on your hard disk (e.g., C:\PLUGIN), run PLUGIN.EXE from 
  141.   Windows.  Plug-In has a built-in install program which will setup
  142.   its data files in a subdirectory of your Plug-In home directory.
  143.  
  144.   If you are updating an existing version of Plug-In, see the next
  145.   section.
  146.  
  147.  
  148. INSTALLING OVER A PREVIOUS VERSION OF PLUG-IN
  149.  
  150.   NOTE!: If you are installing from Plug-In's master diskette (which
  151.          you receive when you purchase Plug-In), simply run INSTALL.EXE
  152.          from the diskette (Hint:  Use Plug-In's Install Application
  153.          feature!).  
  154.          
  155.          If you are installing by using the "freely distributable" software,
  156.          please read these notes:
  157.  
  158.   1) If you already have a version of Plug-In running on your system, you
  159.      must first shut it down before running the new version of Plug-In V2!
  160.  
  161.      For Plug-In 1.x, select "Options | Configure Plug-In | Remove" from
  162.                       Program Manager's menus
  163.  
  164.      For Plug-In 2.x, select "Shutdown Plug-In" from the Plug-In 
  165.                       Control Center dialog (double-click on the 
  166.                       Power Button, or select Options | Configure Plug-In 
  167.                       from the QuickRun menu.
  168.  
  169.  
  170.   2) UnArchive Plug-In V2.  You can overwrite the existing Plug-In
  171.      files if you wish.  
  172.  
  173.   3) Run PLUGIN.EXE from the Plug-In V2 home directory, and you are on
  174.      your way.
  175.  
  176.  
  177. SPECIAL NOTES FOR USERS OF PLUG-IN V2.00 - V2.20
  178.  
  179.   This release contains a large number of changes from previous
  180.   versions of Plug-In V2 (Versions 2.00 thru 2.20).  Following
  181.   are some notes to help you with the update process:
  182.  
  183.   - Plug-In V2.50 uses a different technique for updating the title
  184.     bar displays.  While this new method is much "safer" than the
  185.     previous one, you may notice an occasional flicker or even a
  186.     short period where the title bar displays are removed while
  187.     using certain applications.  This is due to a delay between when
  188.     an application repaints its title bar and when it gives up
  189.     control of the processor so that Plug-In can do its work.  In
  190.     normal operation, you won't even notice any difference.
  191.  
  192.   - Plug-In now stores its data files in a separate directory.  When
  193.     you first run the new version of Plug-In, it will create this
  194.     directory and move your data files from the Plug-In directory to
  195.     the data directory.  This new directory is called PLUGDATA and
  196.     will be located in your Plug-In home directory.  However, if you
  197.     are running Plug-In from a network drive, it will create the
  198.     PLUGDATA directory in your Windows directory.  This whole process
  199.     is completed automatically and does not require any action on your
  200.     part.  One of the benefits of this new data directory is that
  201.     you can easily backup your Plug-In data files and it also results
  202.     in less clutter in your Windows directory (which is already crowded
  203.     with lots of files).
  204.  
  205.   - The sound playback mode will be changed to "Asynchronous" when
  206.     you update to V2.5.  This was done to avoid a problem with some
  207.     sound drivers where sound apps would report "sound device in use"
  208.     when they started.  However, you may find that you enjoy the
  209.     "feel" of synchronous playback mode better.  Please feel free
  210.     to change it back to synchronous by using the Sound Options dialog.
  211.  
  212.   - We now have an "Exclude" dialog, which will allow you to easily
  213.     exclude the title bar dislays and/or event sounds from any
  214.     application you desire.
  215.  
  216.   - For more details on changes in Plug-In V2.5, please see the
  217.     "Change History" at the end of this file.
  218.  
  219.  
  220. MOVING YOUR PLUG-IN DATA DIRECTORY
  221.  
  222.   There are a couple of simple considerations if you wish to relocate
  223.   your Plug-In data directory.
  224.  
  225.   1) You can copy all the files to another directory.  We recommend
  226.      that whatever directory you choose is a separate directory used
  227.      only for storing Plug-In's data files.  By default, this directory
  228.      is called PLUGDATA and is located in your Plug-In home directory.
  229.  
  230.      PLEASE do not move your Plug-In data directory while Plug-In
  231.      is running!  You could lose valuable data!
  232.  
  233.   2) If you simply run Plug-In from a different location (for example,
  234.      if you are updating to a new version and installed in a different
  235.      directory), Plug-In will offer to move the data files for you.
  236.      
  237.   3) If you move the data files manually, there are a couple of ways you
  238.      can inform Plug-In about the move:
  239.   
  240.      a) Edit WIN.INI, and look for a section called [Plannet].  Replace
  241.         the "Plug-In=" entry with the new path, save the file, and
  242.         restart Windows
  243.  
  244.      b) If you move the PLUGDATA directory from your old Plug-In home 
  245.         directory to your new home directory, Plug-In will automatically
  246.         detect the change if the old directory is renamed or removed.
  247.  
  248.  
  249. NOTES FOR INTERNATIONAL USERS
  250.  
  251.   Plug-In has fairly complete support for many international countries.  
  252.   We support international date/time formats and even the Talking Clock 
  253.   feature has the ability to use 24 hour format.
  254.  
  255.   New in this version of Plug-In is an "International Settings" dialog
  256.   (accessed from the General Options dialog in Plug-In's Control Center).
  257.   This dialog allows you to modify a number of important text strings
  258.   used by Plug-In.  This gives it a much more "integrated" feel when
  259.   you use Plug-In with an international version of Windows.
  260.  
  261.  
  262. CONFLICTS WITH OTHER UTILITIES
  263.  
  264.   There are several programs on the market (both commercial and
  265.   shareware) that offer some overlapping functionality with Plug-In.
  266.   While most of these programs do not cause serious conflicts, you
  267.   might see some unexpected behavior.  For example, if you are
  268.   using another utility that displays information on active title
  269.   bars, you will see both applications fighting to paint on the
  270.   title bar.  Another example is utilities that assign sounds to
  271.   system events.  
  272.  
  273.   Please note that almost everything in Plug-In is configurable.
  274.   If there is a feature you don't desire, check the Control Center.
  275.   Chances are you can disable it or modify the settings to your liking.
  276.  
  277.   If you find that Plug-In's Power Button is not functioning, it is 
  278.   most likely caused by another utility which intercepts and (improperly)
  279.   devours mouse messages.  The solution is to ensure that Plug-In starts 
  280.   *after* the utility that is causing the problem.  The easiest thing to 
  281.   do is place Plug-In as the last item in the LOAD= line in your WIN.INI 
  282.   file, or place it in your StartUp group.  Please see the on-line help 
  283.   for further details.
  284.  
  285.   We are currently aware of a few utilities that have problems when
  286.   Plug-In is running:
  287.  
  288.   1) Icon Hear-It and Icon Do-It.  If these programs are loaded prior
  289.      to Plug-In AND you have icon movies assigned to group icons, the
  290.      group icons with the movies will appear as black squares.  The 
  291.      solution is to have Plug-In load prior to these utilities.  Please
  292.      note that due to the way Plug-In initializes, this workaround is
  293.      only possible in the registered version of Plug-In.
  294.  
  295.   2) Wired for Sound Pro.  This program can cause a GP Fault in Program
  296.      Manager if Plug-In is running.  While this problem is not due to a
  297.      bug in Plug-In, we have devised a workaround for those who wish to
  298.      continue using Wired for Sound.  You need to add "WFS=1" to the
  299.      [Settings] section of PLUGIN.INI (in your Plug-In data directory).
  300.      Before using this fix, please take a look in the "INI-Switches"
  301.      subsection of "Tips & Techniques" in the Plug-In help file.  
  302.  
  303.   3) AnyView Pro (Binar Graphics).  This utility has a problem with any
  304.      application that modifies menus in another app.  This is due to
  305.      its "OptiMemm" feature, which by default is set to "high".  To
  306.      use AnyView and Plug-In at the same time, all you need to do is
  307.      set the OptiMemm feature in AnyView to "LOW".
  308.  
  309.   4) Lotus Notes.  Depending on your configuration, the QuickRun menu
  310.      accessed from the Power Button in the Lotus Notes title bar will
  311.      not do anything if you select a menu item.  We are looking into
  312.      this and hope to have a fix shortly.
  313.  
  314.  
  315. EXCLUDING APPS FROM PLUG-IN'S TITLE BAR DISPLAYS AND EVENT SOUNDS
  316.  
  317.   New in this version of Plug-In is an "Exclude" dialog, which allows
  318.   you to easily exclude Plug-In's title bar displays and/or event sounds
  319.   from any applications you desire.  This gives you total control over
  320.   how Plug-In interacts with your programs.
  321.  
  322.   The list of default excludes includes:
  323.  
  324.       ChessMaster 4000 (title bar and sounds)
  325.       Myst (title bar and sounds)
  326.       SideKick for Windows (title bar)
  327.       WordPerfect for Windows (title bar)
  328.       Ami Pro for Windows (title bar)
  329.       Lotus 123 for Windows (title bar)
  330.       InterNetworks (title bar)
  331.  
  332.   You can, of course, change any of these defaults to suit your wishes.
  333.   For example, it is possible in SideKick to disable its use of the
  334.   title bar, in which case you may want to re-enable Plug-In's title bar
  335.   displays for SideKick.
  336.

  340. UPDATE ISSUES FOR OWNERS OF PLUG-IN 1.X
  341.  
  342.   The registration scheme has changed in Plug-In V2.  As a
  343.   current owner of Plug-In 1.x, you are entitled to a complimentary 
  344.   Plug-In V2 registration.
  345.  
  346.   If you wish to order the update diskette, your new registration
  347.   info will come with the package.  Please see the next section,
  348.   "Ordering the Update Diskette..." for full details.
  349.  
  350.   If you want your new registration info, but do not desire the
  351.   update diskette, please send us mail, fax, or e-mail (no phone
  352.   calls, please).  Include your name, address, and phone;  and 
  353.   specify that you are a registered user and want the new
  354.   registration info.  We will mail your registration info to
  355.   you.

  358. ORDERING THE UPDATE DISKETTE IF YOU CURRENTLY OWN PLUG-IN 1.x
  359.  
  360.   If you currently own Plug-In 1.x, you can obtain the released
  361.   version on diskette.  This diskette contains lots of new icons,
  362.   cursors and sound files (including the Plug-In Talking Clock).
  363.

  389. WHERE CAN I OBTAIN THE TALKING CLOCK FILES?
  390.  
  391.   Due to size constraints, the Talking Clock files are packages in a
  392.   separate archive.  The filename is PITALK2?.ZIP, where "?" is the 
  393.   current revision level of Plug-In.  So, if you obtained PLUG260.ZIP,
  394.   look for PITALK26.ZIP.  The size of this file is approximately 300K.
  395.  
  396.   If you can't find this archive locally, you can always obtain it from 
  397.   the Plannet Crafters BBS or via the Plannet Crafters FTP Site (see below).
  398.   Of course, when you purchase the product, we ship you a master diskette
  399.   which contains the Talking Clock files, plus lots of other goodies.
  400.  
  401.   Once you obtain the Talking Clock files, place the contents in the same
  402.   directory as Plug-In.  Note that the Talking Clock feature requires a
  403.   sound card or a special PC speaker driver.  This special speaker driver
  404.   is available from our BBS and FTP site.  The filename is PISPEAK.ZIP
  405.  
  406.   Note:  If you have already obtained the talking clock files from a 
  407.   previous version of Plug-In V2, please be aware that we have updated
  408.   the female voice as of Version 2.5.
  409.  
  410.   Note2:  We now have a few additional variations on the Talking Clock
  411.   voices (echo effects, etc.).  You can download these files from our
  412.   BBS or FTP download site.  We plan to have a number of other voices
  413.   available in the not-too-distant future.

  462. HOW TO USE THE RESTRICTIONS SETTINGS
  463.  
  464.   Plug-In now supports a set of restriction settings as an aid to system
  465.   administrators.  These settings can be used to prohibit the modification
  466.   of most of Plug-In's features.  To use this feature, simply create a
  467.   file called RESTRICT.INI in the Plug-In home directory.  It is recommended
  468.   that this file be made read-only so that end-users cannot modify it.
  469.  
  470.   The format of the RESTRICT.INI file is:
  471.  
  472.      [Restrictions]
  473.      GE=1
  474.      PM=1
  475.      CC=1
  476.      RA=1
  477.      QR=1
  478.      TB=1
  479.      AS=1
  480.      SO=1
  481.  
  482.   Each of these settings can be set to "1" (restricted) or 
  483.   "0" (not restricted).  Note that the default for each entry 
  484.   is "not restricted".
  485.  
  486.   "GE" disables the General Options dialog
  487.   "PM" disables the Program Manager Options dialog
  488.   "CC" disables the Custom Cursors dialog
  489.   "RA" disables the Resource Alerts dialog 
  490.   "QR" disables the QuickRun Config dialog
  491.   "TB" disables the Title Bar Config dialog
  492.   "AS" disables the Alarms & Scheduler dialog
  493.   "SO" disables the Sounds Config dialog
  494.  
  495.   Please note that the purpose of these settings is to disallow end-user
  496.   modifications of configuration data.  However, the individual features
  497.   are not disabled (unless, of course, you disable specific features
  498.   prior to enabling the restrictions settings).  
  499.  
  500.   If you have further questions about the use of the restrictions settings
  501.   and/or questions about using Plug-In in a networked environment, please
  502.   feel free to call us!

  505. HOW TO DE-INSTALL PLUG-IN
  506.  
  507.   If you wish to de-install Plug-In from a system, do the following:
  508.  
  509.         1) If you have used Plug-In's nested groups (with Program Manager),
  510.            you should first un-nest all nested groups by dragging them to
  511.            Program Manager's desktop.
  512.  
  513.         2) Disable "Run Plug-In when Windows starts" in the "General
  514.            Config" dialog and press the OK button.  (If you fail to do 
  515.            this, you must manually remove the Plug-In entry from either 
  516.            the StartUp group or the "Load=" line in the WIN.INI file.)  
  517.  
  518.         3) Shutdown Plug-In by selecting "Shutdown Plug-In" in the 
  519.            Plug-In Control Center dialog.
  520.  
  521.         4) In the Windows directory, delete the following files:
  522.            GROUP.EXE and PLUGIN.* (may not exist)
  523.  
  524.         5) Delete all files in Plug-In's home directory (assuming
  525.            this directory contains ONLY Plug-In files!).  Also,
  526.            be sure to delete any files in the Plug-In data directory
  527.            (default is PLUGDATA under your Plug-In home directory).

  657.      unload the desktop if you temporarilly need the extra memory and/or

  661.      allow Program Manager to be run at any time and still have all the 
  662.      added Plug-In functionality.  So, if you use Plug-In as your shell, 
  663.      you can run Program Manager as you need it, and shut it down when

  666.    - Plug-In now supports a separate data directory, instead of forcing its
  667.      data files to be located in the Windows directory.  In addition to 
  668.      making it easier to manage these files, this also allows you to easily
  669.      backup your valuable Plug-In data.  Note:  The default location for 
  670.      this directory is PLUGDATA in your Plug-In home directory (it will be 
  671.      in the Windows directory if you are running Plug-In from a network

  720.    - Plug-In's title bar displays were sometimes incorrect on apps that 
  721.      allow the title bar to be dynamically disabled.

  723.    - Plug-In wouldn't show up on certain app's main windows (such as Eudora

  742.      started Windows.  We now do not bring up the Control Center if 
  743.      Plug-In is run a second time within the first 60 seconds after 
  744.      Windows is started.

  746.    - The Program Manager iconic display of memory / system resources didn't
  747.      look right if the user had less than 10MB of memory (including swap 
  748.      file memory).

  750.    - Right-Click menus of group items in Program Manager were not sorted
  751.      properly.

  753.    - The Capture dialog now sets the window to default if the chosen
  754.      application is minimized.

  756.    - Certain date formats didn't display properly

  816.      creating a balance between quickly solving problems in Plug-In
  817.      and preventing users from needlessly downloading updates they
  818.      don't need.  If we increased the version number every time we
  819.      did even a very minor release, lots of users would download the
  820.      new version just to have the "latest-and-greatest" version of 
  821.      Plug-In.  Since downloading software has some cost associated
  822.      (for most users), we have decided to do "slipstream" releases
  823.      when we feel the problems solved are very minor and/or rare.

  825.      If the staff at Plannet Crafters tells you that something has 
  826.      been fixed in a "slipstream" release, you can always guarantee 
  827.      that you will get the latest version of Plug-In by downloading

  831.      In this release, we fixed two very rare problems:

  833.      a) Fixed a problem where an app would appear to hang with a 
  834.         flickering menu bar when doing certain operations.  Prior to 
  835.         this version, the workaround was to exclude the title bar 
  836.         displays from the problem app.

  838.      b) Fixed a problem that could prevent the Power Button from 
  839.         displaying the QuickRun menu.  This was caused by other 
  840.         utilities that also capture mouse events, but failed to 
  841.         properly pass these events on to other utilities.  Prior 
  842.         to this version, the workaround was to ensure that Plug-In 
  843.         was the last utility to load when Windows started.
